Pirate Party

Last night we had a pirate party.  No excuses needed.  We decorated a cake put on costumes and had a party.  Here Ever Joy is trying to argh! like a pirate.

I got the idea for a pirate ship cake out of an old Martha Stewart kids fun stuff to do together magazine.  It was fairly easy to make and turned out kinda looking liking a pirate ship.  I made eye patches for the kiddos, we lit candles and had a bottle of sparkling cider (which ended up being flat).

Lots of fun.

Martha and Kate's Instructions:  Bake a chocolate cake in a loaf pan.  Martha suggested a 10x5 inch pan, but I don't have one so I used an 8x5.  I just didn't use as much batter.  Use your favorite chocolate cake recipe, but be sure to butter the pan and dust it with cocoa powder so it comes out easily.  After the cake has cooled put it in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Next take your cake out and slice it into three layers.  Using your loaf pan again line it with plastic wrap and put one slice of your cake in the bottom.  Then take out your ice cream.  I used chocolate chip that came in a box that I could cut off easily.  Cut your ice cream into 1 inch thick slices and place a layer of ice cream in the loaf pan.  Fill gaps with extra ice cream (it's all gonna freeze back together).  I made two layers of ice cream and three of cake.  You will probably have left over ice cream.

Put your ice cream cake back in the freezer for a few hours.  Take your cake back out and trim yourself a bow and stern.  I put chocolate chips in the sides as little cannons.  Martha used Oreos.  Refreeze your cake (up to 5 hours)

Before serving I used blue frosting to make waves around our ship.  Martha used whipped cream sprinkled with blue sanding sugar.

As far as the sail I found clipart on the internet.  I also used a mini muffin cup as a lookout.  Martha used a peanut butter cup.

Don't wait for a birthday.  Have a party!

Added 3/5/12  I get a lot of hits on this post and well, I would love to see pictures of your pirate party.  So if you have a party please send me a link under comments so I can see.  Thanks!
